Mega Mawile is back!

June 20, 2026

This is my take on Mega Mawile for the new meta game. It is a build that does not rely on Trick Room being up for Mawile to shine. Instead it uses a combination of priority moves, naturally fast Pokémon, and defensive pivots to get our threats into good positions.

What the team does

It is a Mega Mawile team first. The plan is to get Mawile in and let it tear through things with its dual STAB and Sucker Punch. What is a bit different is how the team handles speed. It does not rely much on speed control. Sneasler runs Unburden and is built frail on purpose, so its Focus Sash pops easily and doubles its Speed, which lets it outrun a lot of the format even through Tailwind. Mawile has Sucker Punch for priority, Charizard-X has Dragon Dance, and most of the team is fine moving second anyway.

There are two ways to make Mawile threatening. You can set up Trick Room with Sinistcha and let Mawile move first, or you can click Coaching with Sneasler and turn an already strong attacker into something that removes a Pokémon every turn. Incineroar and Sinistcha are the glue that keeps Mawile healthy and alive long enough to do that.

The team also carries a second Mega. Mawile has a rough time into Charizard-Y, which is the scariest thing in the format right now. Charizard-X is the answer. It 4x resists both of the moves Charizard-Y usually runs, so it can come in and Dragon Dance right in front of it.

The Pokémon

Mawile

Mawile is dead simple. It runs its dual STAB plus its strongest priority move in Sucker Punch. The spread just maxes damage. I did not invest in Speed. Without Tailwind it did not feel worth it, so I would rather guarantee that Mawile is slow and moves first under Trick Room.

Sneasler

Sneasler is more interesting. For this team I always want Coaching, and that has knock-on effects on the rest of the set. Coaching takes the last slot, so there is no room for Protect. Without Protect, the usual White Herb set would be pretty weak to Fake Out, so I make Sneasler as fast as possible. That at least speed ties opposing Fake Out Sneaslers, but it does limit how much I can put into bulk.

On top of that, since I am clicking Coaching a lot, Sneasler attacks far less than a normal one, so White Herb does a lot less for me. So I run Focus Sash instead, which also helps with the bulk problem. The best part of White Herb on Sneasler is how reliably it triggers Unburden, and to copy that with the Sash I make Sneasler as frail as I can, even leaving EV points unused, so the Sash breaks and Unburden comes online as often as possible.

Incineroar & Sinistcha

These two go hand in hand. They are the defensive backbone of the team. They keep Mawile alive and let the team pivot around freely. That gives the team a balanced playstyle. Both are heavily defensive and lean into physical Defense, since the format is mostly physical right now.

The one real choice was the item. I would love to run Sitrus on both. VGC does not allow that, so one of them takes a resist berry instead. I went with Shuca on Incineroar and Sitrus on Sinistcha. The team has four Ground weaknesses, and the Shuca helps patch that up.

Charizard-X

Charizard-X is the second Mega and mostly a matchup fix for Charizard-Y. It runs its strongest STAB moves with Dragon Dance and Protect. The Speed is set to outspeed max Speed Mega Aerodactyl after one Dragon Dance. I run Adamant for the Attack nature bump and only need a little Attack investment to get there, so the rest goes into bulk.

Milotic

Both of my Megas hate Intimidate. Mawile is immune to it on the first turn thanks to Hyper Cutter, but it loses that immunity once it Mega Evolves. After that, Intimidate users brought in from the back can still lower its Attack. Charizard-X is affected too. So I wanted a Pokémon that punishes the opponent for leaning on Intimidate, and Competitive Milotic does exactly that. I did not want Kingambit in this slot even though it does a similar job, because it would give the team a fifth Ground weakness, and Milotic does not. The Coil setup set also lines up really well with the double Fake Out plus Sinistcha redirection, since they buy free turns to set up, so it was a better fit than a utility Icy Wind Milotic.

Leads and game plans

The team has a few distinct lead setups.

  • Mawile + Sneasler is the default. You can Fake Out with Sneasler and blow something up with Mawile, or start Coaching the Mawile right away. It is good in a wide range of matchups thanks to Sneasler’s Speed tier and Mawile’s typing. The back is usually Sinistcha and Incineroar, though Milotic is an option.
  • Incineroar + Sinistcha is the Trick Room lead. The plan is Fake Out plus Trick Room to guarantee it goes up, and if the matchup allows it, Parting Shot plus Trick Room is even better since it brings Mawile straight in under Trick Room. Mawile is always in the back here, with Sneasler for after Trick Room ends, or Milotic, in the last slot.
  • Mawile + Sinistcha is a variation on the Trick Room lead. Sinistcha can redirect while Mawile removes something, or against a Ghost that threatens Sinistcha, Mawile’s Sucker Punch pressures it into not attacking, which buys a safe Trick Room with Mawile already on the field. Incineroar is always in the back, plus Sneasler or Milotic.
  • Charizard-X + Sneasler or Incineroar is the Charizard-X mode, mainly for Charizard-Y teams. You either Dragon Dance plus Fake Out, or Coaching plus attack. When Charizard-Y is in the lead you can just ignore it and Fake Out the other slot, which gives Charizard-X a free Dragon Dance since it resists everything Charizard-Y throws at it. The back is usually the other Fake Out user and Sinistcha.
  • Milotic + a Fake Out user is a mix-up, mostly for game two or three once the opponent has stopped respecting Milotic. Fake Out buys the turn while Milotic punishes their Intimidate right away with the Competitive boost, and from there you try to snowball. This lead is the most flexible with the back, usually one Mega plus Sinistcha or the other Fake Out user, and sometimes no Mega at all. You just pick whatever snowballs the lead best.
